Gophers Fall Short Against Badgers in Madison, 81-77

MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 8, 2023) – The University of Minnesota (8-8, 1-4 B1G) fell to 0-5 on the road this season with an 81-77 loss to Wisconsin (5-11, 1-4 B1G) on Sunday at the Kohl Center. Mallory Heyer finished with her second straight double double with 13 points and a career high 14 rebounds while Katie Borowicz finished with 17 points and four rebounds.
Along with Heyer and Borowicz, Amaya Battle finished with 17 points of her own while grabbing eight rebounds and handing out four assists. Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux dropped her sixth double figure game in a row with 13 points while adding eight rebounds in 23 minutes.
Minnesota raced out to a 7-0 lead in the opening moments of the game with Borowicz scoring five of those points. The lead was as much as eight in the opening quarter for the Gophers, but a 9-2 run brought the Badgers back into the game early, with the score ending at 18-16 at the end of the first 10 minutes of play.
The second quarter started with an 8-0 Wisconsin run that pushed the Badgers in front 24-18, forcing a Minnesota timeout. The Maroon and Gold came out of the timeout with five straight points to tighten the game back up. The rest of the half was a back-and-forth affair between the two teams with a Braun triple nearly at the buzzer to give the Gophers a 37-36 lead at the break.
The third quarter also was back and forth between the two squads, but in a different way than the second quarter. The two teams exchanged huge runs with Wisconsin starting it off with a 9-0 run to take an eight-point lead early in the half. The lead would bubble to as much as 13 before the Gophers were able to respond with a 20-7 run to end the quarter and tie the game at 62 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth Wisconsin once again started out strong with four early free throws to take back the lead. In a game that had 17 lead changes the two teams went back and forth late in the game with five coming in the last seven minutes of the game. Down the stretch it was Avery Labarbera of the Badgers who came up big down the stretch with the final four points, including a clutch three with the game tied at 1:51 remaining. The Gophers were unable to score in the final 2:38, and left Madison with their first loss in the Kohl Center since Jan. 9, 2011.
As a team the Gophers shot 26-of-69 (37.7 percent) from the floor and made 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from beyond the arc. The Maroon and Gold out rebounded the Badgers 48-38, including grabbing 16 on the offensive end, but Wisconsin's 27 points off 19 Minnesota turnovers proved to be too much to overcome in the end.
