Five-point weekend for the sophomore
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Thanks to a brilliant start to the season, Minnesota men's hockey forward Jimmy Snuggerud nabbed Big Ten Conference First Star of the Week honors it was announced Tuesday.
The sophomore led the Golden Gophers to a sweep of St. Thomas, a team receiving votes in the national polls, by totaling five points on four goals and one assist. He scored twice in each outing, including the game winner both nights, and recorded the sixth, three-point performance of his career in the season opener Friday. It was the first time he registered back-to-back, multi-goal games for the Maroon and Gold.
A native of Chaska, Minn., Snuggerud buried a power-play tally in the third period of Friday night's rally and completed the Gophers' comeback in dramatic fashion, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime. Earlier, he assisted on Brody Lamb's goal to make it three points in the final frame. He followed that effort by scoring his second goal on the man advantage Saturday and tacked on his fourth of the weekend as an insurance marker during the shutout.
The weekly award is the third in Snuggerud's short tenure after earning the first star (Oct. 11) and second star (Jan. 31) during the 2022-23 campaign. The Gophers had a conference-best 16 total Star of the Week honors a season ago, including seven first star accolades.
