Gophers collect pair of weekly Big Ten awards after dual meet win over South Dakota
MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota newcomers YuTong Wang and Davide Harabagiu were honored by the Big Ten for their performances in last week's meet, the conference announced Wednesday. Wang was named Big Ten Diver of the Week, while Harabagiu was recognized as Big Ten Freshman of the Week. This is the first Big Ten weekly award recognition for both athletes.
In the season opener for the Gophers last Friday, Wang swept the 1-meter and 3-meter dives against South Dakota while achieving NCAA Zone Qualifying scores.
Wang was more than 54 points better than the rest of the 1-meter diving field with a score of 379.15 in his collegiate debut. On the 3-meter, Wang's next closest competitor was almost 98 points away thanks to his 433.30 performance. His 3-meter dive was just 17.65 points off the Minnesota program record of 450.95 set in 2016 by Matt Barnard.
Wang becomes the 15th Gopher to ever win Big Ten Diver of the Week. The last diver from Minnesota to win the award was fellow teammate, Drew Bennett, in January of 2023.
Harabagiu kicked off his collegiate career last week by leading the Gopher men's swimmers with four total victories, including two individual.
Harabagiu made his debut as the third leg of the winning 200 medley relay team with a time of 1:28.71. In his first individual collegiate event, he took the crown in the 100 back with a time of 48.52. He followed that with his second individual win in the 100 free, clocking in at 45.08. In his final race, he swam the third leg of the winning 400 free relay with a split of 44.55.
With the honor, Harabagiu becomes the 13th Gopher to win Big Ten Freshman of the week. The last Gopher to take home the award was diver, Drew Bennett, in January of 2023.
Wang, Harabagiu and the Gophers return to action this week with a two-day meet on the road against SMU. The competition starts Friday night at 6 p.m. and concludes Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center.
