MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota senior Megan Van Berkom has been named the Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week, the conference announced Thursday.

The Chatham, Ill. native led the women's team in last Friday's season opener with individual wins in each of her three races.

Van Berkom opened her night with the 200 fly, a race she currently holds the school record in, touching the wall first in 1:58.66. In the 200 breaststroke, her second event of the night, she clocked a time of 2:17.19 to take the crown before capping her night with a 400 IM win. Her time of 4:15.63 in the 400 IM was almost six seconds faster than her closest competitor.

This is the first Big Ten weekly award of Van Berkom's career. She is the first Gopher to win the award since Lindsey Kozelsky won in February of 2020.

The Gophers return to action this weekend to take on SMU in a two-day meet. The competition commences at 6 p.m. on Friday and concludes on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center.
