Hanson Delivers Career-High 19 Kills in Five Set Win at IU

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. --The Minnesota volleyball team came through in the clutch with a five set win at Indiana (13-25, 32-30, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12) on Sunday at Wilkinson Hall.

The conference win improved Minnesota's record to 13-11 overall and 9-7 in Big Ten play with four games left in the regular season.

Julia Hanson delivered a career-best 19 kills off the bench to lead the Minnesota offense while Taylor Landfair had 15 kills with 10 digs. On the defensive end, Kylie Murr chipped in for with 20 digs to go with seven blocks from Arica Davis.

"This team is amazing," Hanson said. "I have nothing but great words for this team. We've had a hard season but we still came through with no fear and got it done today."

As a team, Minnesota hit .233 with 61 kills, 61 digs, 11 blocks and five aces while Indiana hit .244 with 68 kills, 65 digs, 13 blocks and 10 aces.

Candela Corcelles-Alonso paced Indiana with 24 kills and 10 digs.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Golden Gophers found themselves in an early hole, losing a tough first set 25-13. Minnesota trailed by as many as 12 points as Indiana never surrendered the lead in a set that was notted up five times before the Hoosiers took control.

SET 2 | Minnesota evened the match at 1-1 following a 32-30 second-set win. The Golden Gophers persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured eight lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way. The Gophers racked up 19 kills over the course of the set. The Minnesota offense also got a boost from three aces.

SET 3 | Indiana took a 2-1 match lead after taking down the Golden Gophers in the third set. The Golden Gophers fell in a tough set 25-19. Minnesota trailed by as many as six points as Indiana grabbed the advantage for good at 13-12 in a set that was tied up three times before the Hoosiers took over the lead.

SET 4 | Minnesota then responded to win the fourth set 25-23 to force a fifth set. The Golden Gophers took the lead for good at 20-19 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the 'U' took over in the second half. The Gophers win came in a frame where 17 of their 25 points came via the kill.

SET 5 | Down two sets to one, Minnesota fired back to win sets four and five, culminating in a 15-12 fifth-set victory, to take the match 3-2. A powerful defensive showing helped the Gophers take the fifth set. Minnesota tallied five blocks in the set win. After the lead changed hands one time, the Golden Gophers took control for good at 12-11 and rode that advantage to victory.
