Gophers Fall to Missouri For First Loss of the Season

The University of Minnesota men's basketball team dropped its first game of the 2023-2024 season in a 70-68 loss to Missouri, tonight at Williams Arena. Minnesota is now 2-1 overall, while Missouri improves to 3-1 on the season.

Dawson Garcia led the Golden Gophers with 16 points and nine rebounds, while shooting 7-of-8 on free throws (.875). Isaiah Ihnen and Pharrell Payne also added 10 points each, including three blocks from Payne. Braeden Carrington had a career high 13 rebounds and had six points.

Minnesota started the game off hot by knocking down its first five three-point attempts, behind a pair of threes from Elijah Hawkins, and led 19-12. Missouri answered back and cut the lead down to 22-20, but Minnesota responded and went on an 8-0 run, bringing the score to 30-20 at the 10-minute mark. The Gophers maintained their lead for the rest of the half, leading 38-32 going into the break. Minnesota had an even scoring attack with Hawkins, Payne, Ihnen, and Ola-Joseph, all finishing with six points.

The Gophers turned an early technical foul by Missouri into a four-point play to start off the second half, behind two free throws from Hawkins and a mid-range jumper from Garcia. Minnesota continued to ride this momentum and built its lead up to 46-32. Missouri's Caleb Grill committed two technical fouls causing an ejection, which led to four free throws attempts all made by Garcia, boosting the Gopher lead to 54-39. The Tigers fought their way back into the game going on a 14-2 run cutting the lead all the way down to 65-63 with 3:15 left. Minnesota and Missouri continued to battle back and forth down the stretch, until Missouri's Sean East II made a basket and a free throw for the eventual 70-68 final. 

As a team, Minnesota shot 24-of-58 (.413) from the field, while 8 making threes, and had a game best 44 rebounds. Missouri finished the game shooting 28-of-63 (.444) from the field, while also making 8 threes, and they grabbed 28 rebounds.

Minnesota returns to Williams Arena this Saturday, Nov 18. against USC Upstate. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST on Peacock.
