• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team has a quick turnaround as it hosts its second game in three days when South Carolina Upstate comes to town for a Saturday matinee. Game time is set for 1 p.m., on Peacock. It marks the second Peacock game for the Gophers this season. The game is also a part of the Midwest Madness MTE.
• The meeting between USC Upstate is second all-time for the Gophers and first since 2017. Minnesota won that game, 92-77 on Nov. 10, 2017. Jordan Murphy had a career-high 35 points in that game as well as 15 rebounds for season-opening win.
• Dawson Garcia was named Big Ten's Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office. It marks the first Big Ten Player of the Week honor for Garcia and Minnesota's first since Payton Willis received the award on Jan. 24, 2022. In his first week of play, Garcia averaged 22.5 points when he recorded back-to-back 20-point games. In the opening game of the season last Monday against Bethune-Cookman, Garcia earned a double-double with 23 points, 14 rebounds and added six assists. He was one of three Big Ten individuals to record a double-double in the first game of the season. The last Gopher to open a campaign with a double-double was Daniel Oturu in 2019 (16 points, 10 rebounds vs. Cleveland State). Garcia also went 14-of-16 on free throws, the first Gopher since Marcus Carr in 2021 to score 10-plus in a game. On Friday, Garcia added his second 20-plus scoring game when he produced a team-best 22 points against UTSA. He went 7-of-14 in field goal attempts, 7-of-7 at the charity stripe, six rebounds and three assists.
• Through three games this season, Minnesota has three individuals averaging double-digit scoring. Dawson Garcia leads the charge averaging 20.3 points, followed by Isaiah Ihnen with 12.7 ppg and Cam Christie with 10. Garcia also leads the team in rebounds (9.7 rbg), followed by Braeden Carrington (6.0 rbg).
• Through three games this year, Minnesota ranks third in the Big Ten in offense, averaging 83.3 points per game. The Gophers also rank third in combined team rebounds averaging 41.3 this season. Minnesota ranks first in the Big Ten in free throw attempts, and free throws made, which ranks 16th and eighth nationally.
