ABOUT THE STONY BROOK GAME
  • Minnesota's matchup with Stony Brook is the first between the two programs. The Maroon and Gold are 6-2 all-time against current members of the Colonial Athletic Association. The latest matchup for the Gophers with the CAA was in 2015 when the team defeated Towson.
  • Stony Brook, nicknamed the Seawolves, are winners of their first five games of the season including the most recent win over Delaware State, 86-41 at home. Stony Brook's best win this season was against Columbia, defeating the team that was the 2023 WNIT runner-up by 12 points at home.
  • In five games this season the Seawolves have been paced by graduate student Khari Clark, who has averaged 17.4 points per game while grabbing 7.2 rebounds per contest. The Denver, Colo., native has two double doubles this season and has scored in double figures in every game this season. The team also has two others who average double figures with 13.4 points coming from fellow graduate student Gigi Gonzalez and 10.4 from junior Sherese Pittman.
  • Through Nov. 24, the Seawolves have been one of the best 3-point shooting teams, making nine per contest which is No. 2 in the CAA and No. 24 in the NCAA this season. As a team the Seawolves shoot 36.6 percent from deep, which is 50th in the NCAA. Stony Brook is one of the better free throw shooting teams in the country, sitting at 20th with a team percentage of 79.6 percent from the charity stripe.
GOPHER NOTABLES
  • Minnesota bounced back from its first loss of the season with a dominating 84-31 performance against CSUN (2-3, 0-0 Big West). The victory for the Gophers started on the defensive end, holding the Matadors to just 25.5 percent from the floor and 5.9 percent from beyond the arc, including just two points allowed in the fourth quarter which tied a program record for a single-quarter.
  • In the team's win over CSUN, the Gophers had four players in double figures, highlighted by Mara Braun's game-high 21 points. Braun tied her career high with five threes and also extended her consecutive free throws made to 21 straight dating back to last season.
  • Outside of Minnesota's loss to UConn, the Maroon and Gold have trailed for just 48 seconds in the team's other four games. The only other game the Gophers have trailed in was against Chicago State, where the team trailed by a score of 3-2 in the first quarter.
  • In five games this season the 'U' has committed the least amount of fouls per game in the Big Ten at a rate of 11.6 per contest, which is good enough for No. 6 in the NCAA. Minnesota's defense has also been one of the best in the conference with a 33.5 percent clip, which is No. 2 in the Big Ten and 38th in the country as of Nov. 24. The team's overall scoring defense is also No. 1 in the Big Ten and 13th in the NCAA at 49.0 points per contest.
  • Sophomore Mara Braun earned some well-deserved preseason recognition prior to the start of the 2023-24 season. The second-year Gopher was named to the watch list of the Cheryl Miller Award for the nation's top small forward as well as the Big Ten's 2023-24 Preseason All-Big Ten Team, as voted by the league's coaches. Braun was one of just two sophomores to be honored by the conference's coaches, joining Cotie McMahon of Ohio State.
  • Minnesota's Williams Arena has long been known for its elevated court, but the Golden Gophers have also been steadily successful on their home court over the years. The 'U' has never had a losing season at home at Williams Arena in any full season since the team started playing at the Barn during the 2001-02 season.
