Gopher Offense Shines in 5-1 Victory

11/25/2023 6:01:00 PM | Women's Hockey

The University of Minnesota women's hockey team beat Cornell 5-1 on Saturday behind goals from four different skaters.

Abbey Murphy scored two goals in a dominant offensive showing, while Madeline Wethington, Audrey Wethington and Madison Kaiser each scored once. Saturday marks the fifth time this season Minnesota has had four different players score one or more goals in a single game.

Junior goaltender Skylar Vetter started between the pipes for the Maroon and Gold, stopping 12 Big Red shots and allowing one goal.

Minnesota started strong in the first 20 minutes of play, scoring two goals in the opening frame. Madeline Wethington got the action started with a strike that found the back of the net off a feed from Peyton Hemp. Audrey Wethington followed up her sister's goal with a goal of her own, finding space on a breakaway and lighting the lamp to give the Gophers a two-goal advantage with a short-handed goal.

Murphy scored her first goal less than halfway through the second period, gliding around the Cornell net in one motion and sending the puck into net on her second time around. Cornell scored its one and only goal in the second period.

The Maroon and Gold added to their lead in the final frame, tacking on two more goals in the final 20 minutes. Murphy scored her 15th goal of the season after connecting on an impressive give-and-go play with Josefin Bouveng. Madison Kaiser scored her third goal of the season to increase the Gopher lead to four, which would hold until the final buzzer.

Quotable
"Great win on the road here in D.C.," head coach Brad Frost said. "Really proud of our team. We played with a lot of jump and a lot of energy while playing very sound defensively. We also created a bunch off of our powerplay and gained some good momentum and were able to score right after. We're happy to be part of this great event in D.C., and are looking forward to getting back home."
