Gophers Empty Bench in 97-64 Win Over New Orleans

11/30/2023 9:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Cam Christie led five Minnesota players in double-figures with a career-high 20 points, and the Gophers (5-2) cruised to a 97-64 win versus New Orleans at Williams Arena. Pharrel Payne added 17 points and five rebounds, Dawson Garcia had 15 points, Mike Mitchell Jr. added 14 points and five assists, and Joshua Ola-Joseph finished with 10 points, as Minnesota improved to 4-1 at home this season. In all, Minnesota had all 15 players see court time in the win, including the first time for Jackson Purcell, Will Ramberg and Erick Reader this season.

Christie came off the bench to record his third double-figure scoring game this season, making 6-of-10 field goals, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, and going a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line. He also tied his career-high with four assists for the third time in six games this season. Payne had 17 points in 17 minutes, going 7-of-9 from the floor, and Garcia was 7-of-11 from the field and tied his career-high with three blocked shots. Elijah Hawkins added a season-best nine assists in the win.

Minnesota grabbed a lead early, going on a 12-2 run to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 15-8 advantage and didn't trail from that point on, stretching the lead to as many as 21 points on three occasions late in the half. Garcia paced the Gophers with 11 points, while Christie had nine, Ola-Joseph had eight, and Payne and Braeden Carrington each had seven. Those five combined to go 16-of-24 (.667) from the field, helping Minnesota shoot 62.5 percent (20-of-32) as a team in the opening half.

The lead continued to grow in the second half, as Payne scored 10 points during an 11-2 run to build a 68-40 advantage with 13:44 remaining, and Minnesota led 73-41 on a Christie three-pointer at the 11:55 mark. Head coach Ben Johnson emptied his bench down the stretch, and the Gophers still managed to stretch the lead to as many as 36 points before settling for the 33-point win, it's largest margin of victory since a 99-69 win versus Green Bay on Nov. 25, 2020.

As a team, Minnesota made 38-of-64 (.594) field goals, its best shooting effort since making 39-of-62 (.629) versus Omaha on Nov. 6, 2018.

Minnesota opens Big Ten play on Sunday, 5:30 p.m., CT when the Gophers travel to Ohio State. The game is televised on Big Ten Network and broadcast through the Gopher Radio Network.
