The University of Minnesota men's basketball team welcomed 25 children and family members from the Al Nolen Foundation on Friday, Dec. 15 to Athletes Village. Elementary aged kids were able to shoot on the men's basketball practice court, play games, receive gifts from the team and dinner.

The event was a part of the foundation's Academy of Excellence program. The purpose was to create a program with a focus on Basketball Fundamentals, (SEL) Social Emotional Learning, Financial Literacy, Social Justice, and Wellness & Nutrition. On the court skills and drills will be paired with informative classroom sessions. These sessions will be facilitated by professionals from each field. Scholars will also be provided breakfast and lunch every day, with the hot food truck visiting once a week.

Its founder and current radio color personnel Al Nolen, founded the Al Nolen Foundation in 2020. The non-profit organization was built to create an affirming and supportive environment that nurtures higher-risk youth on their journey to overcome emotional trauma, social isolation, and economic hardships. The Al Nolen Foundation creates fun, inclusive and educational activities designed to develop basic life skills that will be key components in everyday success.
