Five-point weekend in Happy Valley
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Minnesota men's hockey forward Rhett Pitlick was named the Big Ten Conference Second Star of the Week for the second time in the last five weeks it was announced Tuesday.
The junior continues to score at an incredible rate no matter the opponent after he posted five points during a split at nationally-ranked Penn State, contributing in five of the team's seven total goals. He finished the series with two goals and three assists, posting multi-point efforts in both games, including a career-best three points in the victory Friday. Pitlick scored a highlight-reel goal on the power play in the series opener, batting the puck from mid-air after recording two assists earlier in the game.
The Plymouth, Minn., product followed that effort by registering the first shorthanded goal of his career Saturday, and the Gophers' only shorthanded goal this season, to help keep the team in the game. He tacked on a late assist for two points during the series finale on the road.
Pitlick now has 12 points during a career-long, six-game point streak and has at least one goal in each of those six games. His goal streak is the longest active streak in the NCAA and he is the only player in the nation this year to score a goal in six-straight games against a ranked opponent. He also has seven multi-point performances over his last 10 outings, while his nine total assists are tied for the team lead.
It's the third-career weekly honor for Pitlick and second this season after he was named the second star Nov. 7. The Gophers have had five different players honored by the league in 2023-24; Bryce Brodzinski (Nov. 28), Brody Lamb (Nov. 14), Justen Close (Oct. 24), and Jimmy Snuggerud (Oct. 17).
