Trio of Gophers Earn Big Ten Weekly Awards

MINNEAPOLIS - Three members of the Minnesota swim and dive teams were honored by the Big Ten for their performances over the weekend at the Minnesota Invite, the conference announced Wednesday. Freshmen Davide Harabagiu and YuTong Wang were honored on the men's side, while sophomore Vivi Del Angel represented Minnesota on the women's side.

Harabagiu was named the men's Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the third time this season. He competed in five events, setting personal records in four, and broke the school record in the 100 fly. 

To open his meet, Davide set a personal record in the 50 free prelims (19.85) before taking first in the B final with a new personal best time and NCAA B cut of 19.76. On Friday, the Rome, Italy native swam a B cut time of 46.39 in the prelims of the 100 fly before setting a new personal record and school record in the finals with a time of 45.94. He also swam a new best in the 100 back on Friday (47.75). Rounding out his meet on Saturday, Davide set another personal record in the 100 free finals (43.66) and swam a 43.78 split to lead off the 400 free relay. 

For the third time this season, YuTong Wang was named men's Big Ten Diver of the Week. YuTong won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at the Minnesota Invite, hitting the zone qualifying mark in both the prelims and finals of each. 

On Thursday, the Beijing, China native scored a 363.05 in the prelims of the 3-meter to place second. In the finals of the 3-meter, he scored 397.60, including scoring a 79.50 in his third dive to claim the top spot. The next closest competitor finished 43.6 points behind YuTong. On the 1-meter, YuTong scored a personal record of 395.60 in the prelims before taking the crown in the finals with a score of 381.55. 

Vivi Del Angel was named the women's Diver of the Week for the first time in her career. Vivi won both the 3-meter and platform dives, and took second in the 1-meter dive for the weekend. 

She kicked off the Invite with a second-place finish in the 1-meter with a prelim score of 289.30 and finals score of 290.85. On the 3-meter board, she scored a personal record of 356.40 in the prelims before beating that score in the finals with a 367.85 to finish first. Vivi took home the crown on the platform, scoring 331.90. Each of her dives hit the zone qualifying mark.

Vivi is the first Gopher woman to be named Big Ten Diver of the Week since Joy Zhu won it Nov. 16, 2022.

The Minnesota swim and dives teams will take a break before returning to the pool on Jan. 5 for a dual meet in Tampa, Fla.
