Gophers Drop OT Game to Badgers Despite Heyer's Career Night

MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 11, 2023) – Despite a career night from freshman forward Mallory Heyer (28 points, 15 rebounds) the Golden Gophers women's basketball team (9-16, 2-12 B1G) fell to the Wisconsin Badgers (8-18, 3-11 B1G) 76-70 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Williams Arena.

Heyer was phenomenal for the Maroon and Gold, registering career highs in points and rebounds. Heyer's performance came on a 9-of-16 shooting day, hitting a career high five triples. Fellow freshman Amaya Battle secured her first points-assists double double of her career with 10 points and 10 assists. She dished out seven in the first half and added four rebounds in her 41 minutes on the court. Mara Braun was the final Gopher in double figures with 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.

Minnesota raced out to a phenomenal start, holding a 7-point edge early in the first quarter after a 7-0 run broke a 5-5 tie. Wisconsin responded to that run by scoring 14 of the final 19 points of the quarter to take a 19-17 lead into the second.

In the second quarter neither team could take control with the score staying within three points the entire quarter. The lead was exchanged five times and ended with the Gophers on top 35-34 after a Heyer three with 44 seconds left.

The third quarter was one of runs with the Badgers striking first with a 10-3 run followed by a Minnesota 6-0 to end the quarter, giving the Gophers a four-point advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Minnesota lead was as large as five twice during the quarter, including with 1:48 to go, but clutch triples from the visiting Badgers kept the game within reach late. Wisconsin tied the game twice in the final minute and held on for overtime after an Amaya Battle missed layup in the final seconds.

In overtime neither squad was able to get going offensively until the 2:24 mark when Wisconsin hit a triple to go up three. The Gophers were unable to capture the lead back after Heyer tied the game with a three with 1:59. Wisconsin scored eight of the final 10 points down the stretch and escaped with the six-point win.
