Gradwell's Clutch Three Pushes Gophers Past Nebraska, 95-92
2/15/2023 6:24:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 15, 2023) – By way of an Isabelle Gradwell corner three with 1.1 seconds left the University of Minnesota (10-16, 3-12 B1G) took down Nebraska (14-12, 6-9 B1G) at Williams Arena 95-92 on Wednesday night. Mara Braun's Big Ten career high 28 points led the way offensively while Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux added 16 points and Katie Borowicz added 15 off the bench to secure the win at home.
Braun was efficient all night, shooting 9-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. The Wayzata, Minn., native shot 7-of-8 from the free throw line and added her Big Ten career high in rebounds with seven. Micheaux was also efficient from the free throw line shooting 6-of-7 while adding a 5-of-9 shooting night from the floor. Borowicz led the way for the bench squad that ended with 37 points, a Big Ten high for the Golden Gophers. Angelina Hammond was a revelation for the Gophers off the bench, scoring a career high 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and adding five rebounds and one steal in 16 minutes.
For the first nine minutes of action neither team could gain more than a 3-point lead, but a late 5-0 surge by the Cornhuskers helped the visitors lead by four with under a minute to go. On Minnesota's final possession in the quarter Braun connected on a three from the wing and sent the Gophers into the second quarter down just one at 15-14.
The Maroon and Gold exploded in the second quarter scoring 24 points on 55.6 percent shooting from the floor. A 16-3 Minnesota run had the Gophers up 12 with 4:50 go in the half but Nebraska scored five straight to cut into the lead. In the final three minutes the two squads exchanged buckets, resulting in the Gophers heading into the locker room with their largest halftime lead in conference play at 38-31.
The third quarter saw the offensive game of both teams really open up. Nebraska out scored the Gophers 33 to 29 in the frame with both teams shooting above 50 percent from the floor. Nebraska used an early 9-0 run to take the lead but Hammond hit a jumper to tie the game and settle the Gophers offense. For the remainder of the third neither squad was able to gain more than a five-point lead but down the stretch the Gophers hit their free throws to take a three-point lead into the final quarter.
After a Gradwell layup to start the fourth the Cornhuskers rattled off nine straight points to swing the momentum back to the visitors side with a four-point lead with 8:07 to go. A massive triple from Borowicz with 7:44 to go cut that lead to one before Braun gave the lead back to the Gophers once again. The fourth quarter saw 10 lead changes but the final go-ahead basket came on a Braun jumper with 3:09 to go. Despite not losing the lead in the final three minutes, Nebraska clawed its way back with a few threes, including an and-one triple from Jaz Shelley with 46 seconds left that tied the game at 92.
With the ball the Gophers were unable to take the lead back off a Gradwell triple attempt with 16 seconds left. Nebraska called a timeout to advance the ball and were sent to the free throw line for bonus free throws after a foul on the Gophers. Nebraska proceeded to miss both free throws and the Gophers called a timeout to advance the ball with 11 seconds remaining.
Maggie Czinano in-bounded the ball to Braun who then dribbled down the clock before driving to her right side where she found Gradwell in the corner who knocked down her second three of the night and put Minnesota on top 95-92 with 1.1 seconds left. Nebraska was able to get off an attempt at the buzzer, but it fell short and gave the Gophers their second home Big Ten victory.
As a team the Maroon and Gold shot 32-of-63 from the floor (50.8 percent) and hit 8-of-16 from beyond the arc. The team hit 23-of-31 from the free throw line and turned the ball over just eight times while handing out 20 assists.
