Wildcats Down Gophers 76-62 in Evanston

MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 18, 2023) – The University of Minnesota dropped to 1-9 on the road this season after Northwestern (9-18, 2-14 B1G) defeated the Gophers 76-62 in Evanston, Ill., on Saturday afternoon. Minnesota's Mara Braun led the way offensively with 12 points and six boards while Katie Borowicz scored 11 off the bench.
Braun and Borowicz combined for all five of the Gophers threes in the contest, shooting 5-of-13 combined from beyond the arc. Freshman Mallory Heyer snagged seven boards while scoring seven points.
After starting the game hot, shooting 60 percent up until the first media timeout and holding a 14-11 lead the Gophers were out scored by 17 the rest of the way and never had the lead after the 7:38 mark of the second quarter.
Minnesota was able to out score the Wildcats in the second quarter 14-13, but a 22-12 third quarter in favor of the home team was the biggest difference in the contest at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Northwestern held off any Gopher run throughout the fourth quarter and scored 19 points in the final frame to secure the team's second Big Ten conference victory.
As a team the Maroon and Gold shot 22-of-50 (44 percent) from the floor and out rebounded the Wildcats 37-25. The biggest difference in the contest was Northwestern converting 28 points off of the Gophers 25 turnovers, leading to the Wildcats shooting 28-of-61 (45.9 percent) from the floor.
