Michigan State Holds Off Gophers 71-67 in East Lansing
2/22/2023 6:13:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 22, 2023) – The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (10-18, 3-14 B1G) fell short on the road against Michigan State (14-13, 6-10 B1G) 71-67 on Wednesday night at the Breslin Center. Led by freshman Mara Braun's 17 points the Gophers trailed by as much as 12 before roaring back and taking a second half lead before dropping the road matchup with the Spartans.
Braun's 17 points came on 6-of-18 shooting including hitting four threes in the game. She added five rebounds and four assists while turning the ball over just once in 32 minutes. Sophomore forward Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux had a strong first half and ended the game with 15 points and nine boards and swatting away three shots. Isabelle Gradwell continued her hot streak with four threes, ending with 12 points and a career high five assists. Freshman Amaya Battle was great throughout, finishing with eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists and one steal and block.
Minnesota's largest deficit was 12, with that margin coming with 2:25 remaining in the first quarter. That deficit proved to be too much to overcome in the end for the Maroon and Gold, who out scored the Spartans by eight the rest of the way.
The biggest quarter for Minnesota came in the second where the team out scored the Spartans by seven to cut the lead to just three at the break. The third quarter was where the Gophers finally took the lead from the host Spartans. Gradwell hit a pair of threes in the frame, both of which gave Minnesota the lead. Michigan State closed the quarter strong with a 10-2 run and took a 51-45 lead into the final quarter.
Down the stretch the Golden Gophers had the game within two with 4:06 to go after a Katie Borowicz triple but the Spartans held off the Gophers by scoring seven of the final 11 points to win on their Senior Day 71-67.
As a team the Maroon and Gold shot 25-of-64 (39.1 percent) from the floor and hit a season high 11 threes as a team, attempting 26. The Gophers were unable to win the rebound battle with Michigan State grabbing 44 to Minnesota's 40.
