Gophers Down Boilermakers on Senior Day, 77-69

2/26/2023 5:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Minnesota will be the No. 12 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.

MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 26, 2023) – The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (11-18, 4-14 B1G) overcame a 25-point third quarter from Purdue (18-9, 9-8 B1G) by scoring 25 points of their own in the fourth quarter to down the Boilermakers at Williams Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The victory caps off the regular season for the Maroon and Gold, who will enter the 2023 Big Ten Tournament at Target Center in Minneapolis as the No. 12 seed and will take on the No. 13 seed Penn State. That game is scheduled to tip at 1 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network and can be heard on the iHeartRadio app.

Lead the way offensively was Mara Braun with 17 points, hitting three of her six attempts from beyond the arc and all six of her attempts at the charity stripe. Braun dished out a team-high five assists and did not commit a turnover. Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux was efficient in her performance, shooting 7-of-11 from the floor while brining down seven rebounds and committing just one turnover in 33 mintues. Isabelle Gradwell led the seniors with 13 points off the bench while fellow seniors Mi'Cole Cayton (9) and Angelina Hammond (2) also scored off the bench for the Golden Gophers.

With an 11-point first half lead the Golden Gophers took a heavyweight punch from the Boilermakers, who entered Sunday with a NET ranking of No. 42, in the third quarter. Purdue's best scoring run of 10 came during the quarter and it was good enough to put the visitors up by three heading into the final quarter of play.

Braun got the Maroon and Gold off on the right foot in the final quarter when the Wayzata, Minn., native hit a three on the team's first possession. After exchanging buckets for the opening portion of the quarter the Gophers defense stepped up, holding Purdue from making a field goal from the 5:57 mark of the fourth until the 1:45 mark. In that span the Gophers out scored the Boilermakers 12-2 and had a seven point lead with 2:02 to go.

The run ended with an Lasha Petree and-one with 1:45 to go, pulling the visitors to within four. Minnesota secured an extra offensive possession the next time down the court but eventually turned the ball over. The ensuing possession Mallory Heyer walled up and secured a rebound and Braun was able to connect on a driving layup to lead by six with 44 seconds to go.

The rest of the way the teams exchanged free throws with Minnesota hitting all eight of their free throws in the final quarter of play.

As a team the Maroon and Gold shot 48.1 (26-of-54) percent from the floor and hit 9-of-21 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The team hit 16-of-20 (80 percent) from the free throw line and turned 11 Purdue turnovers into 16 points.
