mara braun vs penn state Big Ten Tournament 2023

Gophers Overcome 18-Point Deficit, Ultimately Fall to Penn State 72-67

3/1/2023 4:38:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Mara Braun scored a game-high 25 points in her postseason debut.

MINNEAPOLIS (March 1, 2023) – The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (11-19, 4-14 B1G) came back from as much as 18 points down to tie the game at 66 before falling to Penn State (14-16, 4-14 B1G) 72-67 on Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 2023 Big Ten Tournament at Target Center.

Mara Braun led the way with 25 points for the Maroon and Gold in nearly 38 minutes of action. Braun's 25 points makes her one of nine Gophers in program history to score 25 or more points in any Big Ten Tournament game. Braun was joined by fellow freshman Amaya Battle in double figures with the Hopkins, Minn., native scoring 16 points and adding eight assists, five rebounds and two steals. Graduate student Isabelle Gradwell led the Gophers off the bench with nine points, hitting three of the Gophers seven triples.

After falling behind by a score of 21-3 the Gophers cut the Lady Lion lead to just 21-9 by the end of the first quarter. The two teams were even through the second quarter with the Gophers trailing by 10 at the halftime buzzer.

Braun's 15-point second half began to take form early in the third quarter with the Wayzata, Minn., native getting Minnesota as close as seven during the frame. Penn State did not take their foot off the gas during the third, responding by regaining a 15-point lead at 56-41 at the end of the quarter.

The lead remained at 15 for the early portion of the final quarter with Penn State holding a 63-48 lead with 6:06 to go at the final media timeout of the day. Out of the break Minnesota got back-to-back triples from Braun and Gradwell to get the game back to single digits with 4:20 to go. Battle then got Minnesota to within seven with 3:06 to go with an and-one and then hit both free throws on the next possession to cut it to five with 2:32 to go.

The lead was still five for Penn State with 1:37 to go, with the Lady Lions holding possession after a jump ball call. On the following possession Minnesota's defense forced a turnover and after a Gopher timeout Gradwell hit a three to cut Penn State's lead to two with 59.2 seconds to go. Right after the three Penn State threw the ball out of bounds, giving Minnesota the ball back. On the ensuing possession Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux made a shot through contact to tie the game at 66 with 45.7 seconds to go.

Penn State's next possession ended in an and-one, giving the Lady Lions a three-point lead with 30.2 seconds to go. Minnesota then was unable to connect on the next possession and Penn State hit their free throws down the stretch to end Minnesota's season.
