Third-Place Performances Put Gophers in Fifth at Big Tens

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota women's swimming and diving team used a pair of third-place finishes to put itself in fifth place following the second day of competition Thursday at the 2023 Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Junior Megan Van Berkom and fifth-year senior Joy Zhu earned bronze medals for the Golden Gophers in the 200 IM and 1-meter diving, respectively.

For Van Berkom, the third-place performance marked her second straight top-three effort in the event at Big Tens after her runner-up finish a year ago in a school record time of 1:54.92. Thursday night, she recorded a time of 1:55.67, which is the second fastest in school history behind only last year's record-setting mark.

Zhu grabbed third place on the 1-meter board for the second year in a row at the Big Ten Championships. She was third through the prelims with a score of 303.20 and remained in that spot after a performance of 314.40 in the finals.

Also finishing on the podium on the 1-meter was junior Megan Phillip, who came in eighth with her score of 281.80.

Minnesota's relay team in the 400 medley relay earned a sixth-place finish to reach the podium, as well. Junior Paula Rodriguez Rivero led off with a personal-record split of 52.94, which also lowered her NCAA 'B' cut for the season. That was followed by senior Emma Lezer in the breaststroke (1:00.53), freshman Ava Yablonski in the butterfly (52.80) and sophomore Hannah Cornish anchoring the freestyle (48.79).

Three Gophers reached the 'B' final of the 50 free with Cornish taking 10th in a season-best time of 22.30, fifth-year senior Olivia Bloomer coming in 14th at 22.63 and fellow senior Maggie Summit placing 16th in 22.69. All three times were 'B' cuts, as well.

In the 500 free, fifth-year senior Kate Sullivan finished in 15th place with her time of 4:48.56, while sophomore Eliot Kennedy came in 23rd in 4:50.74.

Other final appearances included freshman Vivi Del Angel's 11th-place finish in the 1-meter with her score of 293.50 and senior Rachel Butler taking 20th in the 200 IM with a season-best 2:00.40.

With 297 points through seven events, Minnesota is alone in fifth place. Ohio State leads the way with 441 points, followed by Indiana (429.5), host-Michigan (423.5) and Wisconsin (347).

Friday's schedule includes the prelims of the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 3-meter diving, plus the 200 free relay in the evening session.
