Minnesota Falls Short on Day Two of ACC/Big Ten Challenge

GAME ONE
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers were not able to score a run against Virginia pitcher senior Molly Grube on Friday and were shut out 3-0 by the Cavaliers.

Senior Autumn Pease (3-1) got the ball to start for Minnesota and took the loss. The right-hander went eight innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out eight.

Senior Sydney Strelow led the way offensively for the Gophers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota did not advance a runner past second base in the game. The Maroon and Gold 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, last placing a runner as far as second in the ninth, when Strelow made it into scoring position with one out.

GAME NOTES
» Pease fanned eight Cavaliers hitters.
» Minnesota pitchers limited Virginia to just 1-for-5 (.200) with runners in scoring position.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 34 Virginia hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out nine.
» Strelow led the Gophers at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a double.
» Virginia was led offensively by sophomore Sarah Coon, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
» Grube led the Cavaliers pitching staff, throwing nine scoreless innings.


GAME TWO
 CHAPEL HILL -
An explosive offensive output was not enough for Minnesota on Saturday. The Gophers plated five runs, but could not hold the North Carolina Tar Heels at bay, and were bested 10-5.

Junior Jacie Hambrick (2-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Minnesota (4-4, 0-0 Big Ten).

In the batter's box, the Gophers were paced by freshman Addison Leschber, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and three RBI. Sophomore Taylor Krapf compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Graduate Natalie DenHartog also contributed for Minnesota, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers were trailing 2-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Senior Sydney Strelow came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota and get them on the board.

The Tar Heels expanded their lead to 3-1 before the Maroon and Gold offense got back to work, taking the lead in the third. Minnesota scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Leschber, scoring Krapf and DenHartog, which brought the Golden Gophers lead to 4-3.

Minnesota held North Carolina without a run before expanding their lead to 5-3 the following inning. The Gophers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of DenHartog. The Gophers were unable to hold the lead, as North Carolina scored seven times over the remaining three innings to grab the 10-5 win.
