Minnesota Defeats Virginia 2-1 in Extras

CHAPEL HILL _Â The Minnesota Golden Gophers needed eight innings to finish the job, but secured the 2-1 extra-innings victory over the Virginia Cavaliers Sunday.
Senior Autumn Pease (3-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minnesota (5-4, 0-0 BIg Ten). The right-hander went 2.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit, allowing one walk and striking out six. Junior Jacie Hambrick also made an impact in the circle for the Gophers, starting the ballgame and throwing 5.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
Freshman Jess Oakland led the way offensively for the Maroon and Gold, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a double, two walks and an RBI. Senior Delanie Cox compiled a standout performance as well, going 1-for-1 with a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Golden Gophers first put runs on the board in the seventh inning. Minnesota got on the board thanks to Oakland's RBI double with two outs.
The game remained tied until the very next inning, when the Golden Gophers got going again on offense. Junior Clare Ceynowa came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Gophers. The score remained 2-1 for the rest of the game, as Minnesota held on for the win.
