Gophers Head to Texas for Baylor Invitational

2/22/2023 7:17:00 PM | Softball

MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher softball team continues its five-weekend road stretch with a trip to Waco, Texas to compete in the Baylor Invitational. Minnesota will face Texas A&M Commerce, No. 22/25 Baylor and No. 23/21 Maryland in a non-conference tilt.

Minnesota will compete in five games in three days. Two of the Gophers' five games are to be determined. Check back to gophersports.com for the latest updates to Minnesota's schedule.

Scouting Texas A&M Commerce
Geographically the closest team to Waco, the Lions will enter the Baylor invitational with a 2-9 record. The meeting between Texas A&M Commerce and Minnesota is the first ever.

Scouting Baylor
Hot off a victory over top ranked Oklahoma, the No. 22/25 Baylor Bears will look to continue their four-game win streak at their home tournament. The Bears' only loss came against seventh-ranked Arkansas in Las Vegas during opening weekend.

Baylor's Dariana Orme was honored as Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for a career-high seven innings of work against Stephen F. Austin, throwing 81 pitches. She struck out two hitters in the Bears' 4-3 win over the Sooners. Their first over a top-ranked team since 2009.

Scouting Maryland
Maryland will cross paths with Minnesota for the second weekend-in-a-row as both teams were hosted at North Carolina last weekend for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Terrapins are on a six-game win streak, with their only loss coming against Cal Baptist by one run.

With eight wins heading into the weekend, the Terrapins have clinched two top-25 wins over No. 22 Oregon and No. 3 Oklahoma State. For the first time since 1999, Minnesota's Big Ten foe has entered the top 25 in the USA Softball, D1 Softball, and the NFCA rankings this week.

Weekend Quick Hits
The Pease Knees

Over the weekend, graduate pitcher Autumn Pease made two starts and three appearances. In her start against Virginia, the Murrieta, Calif., native matched her career high of eight innings pitched while allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eight. Pease finished the weekend holding a 3-2 record so far this season.

Conference Leaders
Amongst the 14 teams in the Big Ten, Minnesota ranks second in multiple stat categories. Including doubles (13), home runs per game (0.78), on base percentage (0.408), and in scoring (5.89).

Cuh-Lare!
Scoring the game-winning run against Virginia on Sunday was junior Clare Ceynowa. In her first appearance for the Gophers, Ceynowa entered as a pinch-runner for Taylor Krapf. After Delanie Cox hit a sacrifice fly to right field, Ceynowa advanced home to win the game.

First of Many
For the first time in her career last week, infielder Jess Oakland has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Oakland led the team with 13 RBI on opening weekend, collecting five extra base hits (eight total) and six runs, including two home runs which came against Colgate and Western Kentucky. Through five games, Oakland went 8-for-16, slugging 1.125 with a .619 on-base clip.

On the Road Again
This weekend marks Minnesota's second-straight weekend on the road. After traveling to North Carolina this weekend, the Maroon and Gold will head to Texas, California and Kansas.

Gopher Indoor Classic
For the first time ever, Minnesota will host the Gopher Indoor Classic at U.S. Bank Stadium. NDSU, Central Michigan, Idaho State, Drake, and St. Thomas will all compete from March 10-12 between 15 games.

Graduate outfielder, Natalie DenHartog, has been recognized amongst the best in the country. DenHartog has earned preseason awards from D1 Softball (Preseason Outfield Power Rankings No. 11, Preseason D100 Player No. 47), Softball America (2023 Preseason Top 100 No. 56), and Extra Inning Softball (Extra Elite 100 No. 40).
