Gophers Start Three-Game Road Stint At Illinois Monday

STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is back in action for the second time in three days when it plays at Illinois, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. Minnesota is in the midst of four games in seven days, three of which are on the road. Monday's game was originally scheduled for Feb. 7, however Minnesota had to postpone the game due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols within the program. Following the Illinois game, Minnesota has road games at Maryland (Wednesday) and at Nebraska (Saturday).
• Minnesota hosted Penn State on Saturday night as the Gophers fell, 76-69 at Williams Arena. Dawson Garcia returned to the Gopher lineup and led Minnesota with 23 points, and Pharrel Payne had 18 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists, but PSU's Jalen Pickett scored 32 for Penn State as the Nittany Lions recorded the win.
• With the exception of losing Parker Fox and Isaiah Ihnen to season-ending injuries earlier this year, Minnesota was back at full strength Saturday night for the first time since Jan. 19. Dawson Garcia and Braeden Carrington returned to action during the Penn State game. Carrington missed seven games due to a stress reaction in his right leg, announced Jan. 19. Garcia suffered a bone bruise in the second half at Michigan (Jan. 22) and was sidelined for five games. Garcia returned to the starting lineup and scored 23 points against the Nittany Lions and seven rebounds. It marked his 16th double-figure scoring game of his Gopher career and fourth with 20-plus points. Carrington returned for limited minutes on Saturday where he played seven minutes.
• Pharrel Payne collected a career-high 18 points in the game against Penn State and also his second double double of his Gopher career with 10 rebounds. The rookie also established six assists in the game, another career high. On the season, Payne has had eight double-figure scoring games, all but one coming off the bench.
• For the second-straight game, Minnesota as a team shot 50 percent from the field. The Gophers held a 50 percent shooting clip in both the Iowa and Penn State game. That tied a Big Ten best for the Gophers, also set that in their win against Ohio State on Jan 12.
ABOUT ILLINOIS
• Illinois holds a 17-9 overall record and 8-7 mark within Big Ten play. Illinois defeated Rutgers on Feb. 11, but recently fell at Penn State (93-81) and at Indiana (71-68). Illinois is 12-2 at home this season, including a 5-2 mark in home Big Ten games. The Illini was without leading scorer, Terrence Shannon Jr., in the game at Indiana due to concussion protocols.
• Shannon Jr., averages a team-best 17 points and has 75 assists, averages 5 rebounds and shoots 43 percent from the field. Matthew Mayer follows with 12.2 ppg, while Dain Dainja and Jayden Epps follow with 10.3 and 10.1 ppg. Coleman Hawkins holds a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game and 9.7 ppg, and also leads the team in assists (80). Mayer, Dainja and Hawkins have combined for 101 blocks this season, as the team holds 154, a Big Ten best.
• As a team, Illinois averages 74.9 points, while allowing 65.3. The Illini are shooting 45.4 percent and 31.2 past the arc. Illinois also averages 38.5 rebounds per game, which ranks second in the league behind Purdue.
THE LAST TIME
• Dawson Garcia led Minnesota with 17 points and Ta'Lon Cooper added 16, but Illinois broke away from the Gophers in the second half to post a 78-60 win Jan. 16 at Williams Arena.
• The Illini held a narrow 35-32 lead at the half, and the Gophers opened the second half by scoring the first four points for a 36-35 edge, but Illinois responded with a 12-0 run and never looked back as it recorded its fourth-straight victory.

• The Minnesota men's basketball game originally scheduled for Feb. 7 at Illinois, will now be played on Monday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. in Champaign, Ill. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network. The game was postponed due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols within the Golden Gopher program.
• Michigan State announced on Monday, Feb. 13 that the men's basketball game between Minnesota and Michigan State, which was to be contested on Wednesday, Feb 15 at Michigan State, was postponed because of the tragic shootings that took place on the Michigan State campus on Monday. Any information regarding rescheduling would be announced at a later date.
