Duo scores 11 points for Gophers
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Behind a combined 11 points in a two-game sweep on the road, Matthew Knies and Logan Cooley of the Minnesota men's hockey team were named the Big Ten Conference First and Second Star of the Week, respectively.
Knies scored the game-winning goal and had multiple points in both outings at No. 7 Penn State over the weekend, totaling five points on three goals and two assists. He pushed his already NCAA-leading total to seven game winners, which ranks third in single-season program history. The Phoenix, Ariz., product recorded a goal and two assists Friday night during the Maroon and Gold's 7-2 rout as he posted his fourth, three-point performance of the year.
The sophomore followed that by powering the Gophers to a last-minute rally Saturday, scoring the tying goal with 41 seconds remaining in regulation, before getting the game winner in overtime. It was Knies' second multi-goal outing of the last four weeks and he tallied his 20th goal this season, the second-most of any NCAA player in 2022-23.
Cooley registered six points, a goal and five assists, against the top-10 Nittany Lions and jumped into Minnesota's scoring lead with his 44th point of the year. With points in both games, the freshman extended his season-long point streak to nine games.
The Pittsburgh, Pa., native put on a show Friday night back in his home state as he became the first player in the B1G this season, and 10th nationally, to record a five-point night. Cooley had four assists before scoring on a breakaway, all of which came in the second period. He added an assist Saturday on the game winner by Knies, showcasing his skills with the puck to spin around the defenseman and create the sweep-clinching shot.
It's the first weekly honor of the season for Knies and second of his career, while Cooley picks up the award for the fifth time in his freshman campaign, the most of any player in the league. Minnesota has had a B1G Star of the Week in 12 of the 16 weeks it's played, totaling 14 this season from seven different student-athletes.
