Soloveychik Snags Silver on Day Two of Big Tens

2/23/2023 8:12:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota sophomore Bar Soloveychik had the best finish of his young and promising career at the Big Tens as he secured a silver medal Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Soloveychik, whose best finish as a freshman was fourth in the 500 free a year ago, earned his silver medal in the same event Thursday. He was the top seed after the prelims thanks to his time of 4:16.46, but in the finals he was outpaced by Wisconsin's Jake Newmark (4:12.96) despite a season-best time of 4:14.45.

Since the 2009-10 season, Soloveychik now owns the top nine times in the 500 free at Minnesota.

In the same event, Junior Chris Nagy won the 'C' final with a time of 4:19.75, which places him ninth in Minnesota history, while fellow junior William Christenson reached the 'B' final and claimed 16th at 4:22.60.

With 280 points through seven events, Minnesota is alone in fifth place. Ohio State holds a slight lead over Indiana at 487-478, while host-Michigan is third with 403 points and Wisconsin sits fourth at 341.

Minnesota also saw a podium finish in the 200 IM from junior Kaiser Neverman as he placed fourth at 1:43.97. That was two spots better than his sixth-place finish in the prelims, while his finals time was just .06 off the school record he set earlier this year at the Minnesota Invite.

It was a stellar performance all around for the Gophers in the event as sophomore Chris Morris (1:44.88, 12th place), senior Desmon Sachtjen (1:46.24, 19th) and junior Casey Stowe (1:46.30, 20th) all broke their personal records and, in the process, recorded or lowered their NCAA 'B' cuts.

Three Gophers reached the finals of the 50 free with redshirt junior Lucas Farrar pacing the way with a 13th-place finish. His time of 19.66 was a season-best, while senior Shane Rozeboom claimed 22nd with a season-best 20.29 and freshman Lovro Serdarevic was right behind him at 20.37. That time for Serdarevic was just .01 off the personal record he set in the prelims.

Minnesota also got a fourth-place finish from its 400 medley relay team. Sachtjen (47.11 back), fifth-year senior Max McHugh (50.61 breast), Neverman (46.14 fly) and Chris Morris (43.15 free) finished with a season-best time of 3:07.01.

In diving, freshman Drew Bennett finished 17th on the 1-meter with a score of 279.45 to earn nine points for the Golden Gophers.

Friday's schedule includes the prelims of the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 3-meter diving, plus the 200 free relay in the evening session.
