Six Gophers Named to All-WCHA Teams

Taylor Heise and Grace Zumwinkle were selected to the All-WCHA First Team.
MINNEAPOLIS – Six Gophers were selected as 2022-23 All-WCHA Team honorees; the conference announced on Thursday. Minnesota's six honorees were tied for the most in the conference.
Fifth-year forwards Taylor Heise and Grace Zumwinkle were named to the All-WCHA First Team. Forwards Abigail Boreen and Abbey Murphy and goaltender Skylar Vetter also represent the Gophers as All-WCHA Third Team selections. Freshman defender Nelli Laitinen was named to the All-WCHA Rookie Team.
Taylor Heise – All-WCHA First Team
For the second straight year, Taylor Heise is one of three WCHA forwards to be selected to the first team. The reigning WCHA Player of the Year has accumulated 57 points in 33 games with 25 goals and 32 assists. The Lake City, Minn., native is a four-time WCHA forward of the week winner this season and was named HCA National Player of the Month in December. Heise currently ranks first in the WCHA in points, goals, points-per-game (1.73), goals-per-game (.76), shorthanded goals (4), hat tricks (2) and faceoff wins (441).
Grace Zumwinkle – All-WCHA First Team
Joining Heise on the first team is Grace Zumwinkle, who has now been named to an All-WCHA Team in each of her five seasons as a Gopher. 2022-23 marks the fourth time Zumwinkle has been named to the All-WCHA First Team. Minnesota's co-captain was named to the second team during her junior season in 2019-20. The Excelsior, Minn., native is a two-time WCHA forward of the week winner this season and was named WCHA and national player of the month in January. Zumwinkle has totaled 52 points this season (a new career high) with 22 goals and 30 assists in 33 games. She ranks third in the WCHA in points and goals and first in game-winning goals (8) and hat tricks (2).
Abigail Boreen – All-WCHA Third Team
After being named to the second team last season, Abigail Boreen is named to her second-career all-WCHA team. Minnesota's co-captain has tallied 33 points in 31 games with 21 goals and 12 assists. Her six multi-goal games are tied for first on the team. The Somerset, Wis., native ranks fourth in the WCHA in goals and power-play goals (6), third in goals-per-game (.68) and sixth in game-winning goals (4).
Abbey Murphy – All-WCHA Third Team
After being named to the all-rookie team as a freshman in 2020-21, Murphy adds another all-WCHA team honor in her sophomore season. The Evergreen Park, Ill., native was named WCHA forward of the month in October. This season, Murphy has accumulated new career highs in points (43), goals (24) and assists (19) in 33 games. She ranks second in the conference in goals, goals-per-game (.73) and game-winning goals (5). Murphy also ranks first in the conference in plus/minus (+36), fifth in points and second in shooting percentage (min. 25 shots) with .205.
Skylar Vetter – All-WCHA Third Team
Sophomore goaltender Skylar Vetter has starred this season in 30 starts for the Gophers this season. Vetter has been a consistent feature in the WCHA award section this season with three WCHA goaltender of the month and six WCHA goaltender of the week honors. The Lakeville, Minn., native was named national goaltender of the month in December and a semifinalist for HCA National Goaltender of the Year. Vetter has posted a 22-5-3 record with a 1.97 GAA and a .920 Sv% with five shutouts. She ranks first in the conference in wins, second in saves (653), third in GAA and fifth in Sv%.
Nelli Laitinen – All-WCHA Rookie Team
In her first season as a Gopher, Nelli Laitinen is one of six rookies honored by the conference. The defender from Lohja, Finland was named to the 2023 HCA National Rookie of the Year Watch List earlier this month. Laitinen has recorded 16 points in 25 games with three goals and 13 assists. She ranks second among WCHA rookie defenders in points-per-game (.64) and assists-per-game (.52).
