Bats Fall Silent in Minnesota's loss to Saint Louis

Minnesota scored just once after the first inning
FORT MYERS, Fla. --The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell in a 6-3 loss to the Saint Louis Billikens Friday.
Freshman Caden Capomaccio (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (0-5). He pitched three solid innings but a three-run home run in the top of the seventh put the Billikens up 5-2, which was enough to emerge victoriously. Sophomore Tucker Novotny started the ballgame and went four innings, surrendering two runs, both earned, on three hits, walking three and striking out four.
Ike Mezzenga had two doubles (three hits) and an RBI to lead the Golden Gophers. Junior Boston Merila went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI while sophomore Jake Perry also helped out for Minnesota with an RBI single.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Minnesota pushed across two runs in the frame after Brady Counsell singled with two outs and stole second. Perry singled him home before an RBI double from Mezzenga put the 'U' up 2-0.
SLU tied up the game in the fourth with a pair of two-out RBI singles. A three-run home run by right fielder Patrick Clohisy put SLU up 5-2 in the top of the seventh. Minnesota scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Merila, which brought the score to 6-3, which would be the final score.
GAME NOTES
» Mezzenga led the Golden Gophers, compiling three base hits in the ballgame. It was his second multi-hit game as a Gopher.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 41 Saint Louis hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out nine.
» Saint Louis was led offensively by sophomore Patrick Clohisy, who went 1-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
» Junior Henry Litman led the Billikens pitching staff, throwing 4.1 scoreless innings.
