Gophers Sweep St. Thomas, Advance to WCHA Final Faceoff

2/25/2023 6:46:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Second-seeded Minnesota will face third-seeded Wisconsin in the semifinals on Friday, March 3.

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 4/4 Gopher Women's hockey team completed a first round sweep of the St. Thomas Tommies with a 6-2 win on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena.

Grace Zumwinkle picked up right where she left off after a two-goal performance last night, finding the back of the net to give the Gophers an early 1-0 lead. Despite outshooting the Tommies 26-7 in the first period, Minnesota (27-5-3) took a 1-0 lead into the first break.

St. Thomas (8-27-1) tied things up a minute into the second period off the stick of Brieja Parent. Minnesota answered to take a 3-1 lead, scoring twice in the span of fifteen seconds. The Gophers' back-to-back goals came from Crystalyn Hengler and Taylor Heise. Abbey Murphy added another goal to close out the second period up 4-1.

The Tommies came out strong in the third and cut the Gophers' lead to just two as Maija Almich scored from behind the net. Heise then netted her second of the game and 29th of the season midway through the third before Catie Skaja sealed the deal, scoring with just under a minute left in regulation.

Skylar Vetter started in goal for Minnesota, making 22 saves in her 24th win of the season. Saskia Maurer started in goal for the Tommies, stopping 51 shots in the loss.
