Cooley, Snuggerud represent Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS - Logan Cooley and Jimmy Snuggerud of the Minnesota men's hockey team were named to the 2023 Hockey Commissioners Association Tim Taylor Rookie of the Year Award Watch List. Twenty-seven players, including the two Golden Gophers, landed on the list as announced by the HCA Thursday.

Both Cooley and Snuggerud were first-round draft picks in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft last July going No. 3 to the Arizona Coyotes and No. 23 to the St. Louis Blues, respectively. Snuggerud paces the top-ranked Gophers in scoring with 37 points, while Cooley is just one point behind totaling 36 as they rank in the top eight nationally. They are the first pair to tally 30 or more points in their first year with the Maroon and Gold since 2013-14.

Cooley has recorded at least one point in 21 of 27 games played and paces the team with 23 assists, while all 13 of his goals have come in Minnesota victories. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native has tallied four game-winning goals this season, all of which have been in the previous 14 contests. He also is the only skater in the Big Ten Conference to earn four Star of the Week honors from the league. In a seven-game stretch from Nov. 17 at Michigan until Dec. 10 against Wisconsin, Cooley had a point in every game and went six-straight outings with multiple points.

Snuggerud has produced 13 multi-point efforts this season, including back-to-back, three-point games last weekend against Michigan State to regain the Gophers' scoring lead. The product of Chaska, Minn., has put up at least one point in 20 of his 28 collegiate outings and was the first player in the NCAA to record a hat trick this season when he scored three times at home versus Minnesota State Oct. 7. He is second on the team registering 16 goals, with five of those coming on the power play, and has added two game winners.

At season's end, a ballot consisting of each Division I conference's Rookie of the Year will be presented to the assistant coaches and they will vote, one vote per school, to identify the winner. This year's National Rookie of the Year will be announced during the Frozen Four in Tampa in April.
