Battle Wins it at the Buzzer For a 75-74 Victory Over Rutgers
3/2/2023 9:19:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Jamison Battle led Minnesota with 20 points and made three three-pointers in the final minute, capped by his buzzer-beating game-winner, and the Gophers snapped their 12-game winning streak with an improbable 75-74 win over Rutgers at Williams Arena.
Minnesota trailed 70-60 with 1:15 remaining, and Minnesota's only lead of the game came on Battle's winning shot in front of the Gophers' bench. Dawson Garcia finished with 19 points and seven rebounds and Pharrel Payne had a double-double with 15 points and a team-best 10 rebounds rebounds. It was Minnesota's first home game since Feb. 18 versus Penn State.
Â
Rutgers led 40-33 at the half, as the Scarlet Knights had two players in double figures and made 15-of-29 (.517) field goals in the opening 20 minutes. Garcia led the Gophers with 10 points, Braeden Carrington knocked down both three-pointers he attempted and had eight points, and Payne added seven first-half points and a team-best six rebounds. Minnesota was 11-of-26 (.423) from the field, including 4-of-9 (.444) from beyond the arc. Ta'Lon Cooper (nine points, 11 assists) and Battle each made three-pointers early in the second half, but the Scarlet Knights continued their hot shooting and pushed the lead to 53-39 about five minutes in.
A 6-0 Gophers run narrowed the deficit to 53-45 with 13:12 left, and then the teams literally traded baskets for the next 12-plus minutes, keeping the lead between seven and 11 points until Garcia scored on back-to-back possessions to cut it to 70-64 with 0:55 left. Minnesota held Rutgers without a field goal the final 3:09 of the game, while making six of its final eight shots to win the game. Battle cut it to 72-67 by hitting a three with 0:43 remaining, then made a trey with 0:22 left to cut it to 73-70. Battle then came up with a steal, and missed an open three-pointer to tie, but the rebound went out of bounds off RU with 0:09 left. Jaden Henley put back a missed trey from Garcia to pull the Gophers within 73-72 with 6.5 seconds left. Caleb McConnell made a free throw with 5.8 left, and then Battle drained his third trifecta of the final minute to win it at the buzzer.
Battle played in his 100th career collegiate game this evening, while Garcia reached double-figure scoring for the 20th time this season.
Minnesota wraps up the regular season by playing host to arch-rival Wisconsin on Sunday, March 5, at 6:30 p.m. CDT on FS1.
