Dawson Garcia led Minnesota with 19 points and Braeden Carrington added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds, but Wisconsin rallied from a seven-point second half deficit to escape with a 71-67 win over the Gophers in the regular season finale at Williams Arena. Minnesota led 53-46 with 10:47 remaining, but the Badgers battled back to take the lead with 6:33 left and held on for the win down the stretch. Joshua Ola-Joseph finished with 10 points and four rebounds, Ta'Lon Cooper had eight points and eight assists, and Jaden Henley added eight points.
Minnesota opened the game by making three of its first four field goals, including a pair of layups by Henley, and trailed 7-6 early. Garcia knocked down a pair of three-pointers, the first that tied the score 9-9 and the second that knotted the score at 18-18 with 8:58 left in the half. The Gophers followed by taking their first lead on a putback layup by Carrington. Ola-Joseph added a layup to cap a 7-0 run and give Minnesota a 22-18 lead with 5:12 on the clock. The Badgers battled back with a 7-2 run to lead 25-24, but an Ola-Joseph layup and a trey by Henley regained a four-point lead. Minnesota, which made 15-of-25 (.600) first half field goals, closed the half with a jumper from Garcia and a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Jamison Battle to enjoy a 36-29 advantage at the break. Garcia led the team with 10 points at the half, while Henley had seven, and Ola-Joseph added six.
The Badgers came out of the locker room and began the second half with a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to 37-36 at the 17:43 mark. Minnesota responded with a 6-1 run to maintain a 43-38 edge at the first media timeout. Garcia's third three-pointer of the night stretched the Gophers' lead back to six points at 46-40, and Minnesota held a 50-46 advantage at the second media timeout. A Badgers turnover led to a three from the top of the key for Carrington, forcing a UW timeout with Minnesota up, 53-46. A 7-0 run by UW tied the score and it was knotted at 55-55 with 7:59 remaining. The Badgers built a 62-59 lead with 4:05 left, but a three-point play from Cooper tied the score at the 2:37 mark. Wisconsin regained a 66-62 lead with less than a minute left and went 4-of-4 at the free throw line in the final 10 seconds to escape with the win.
Minnesota honored its graduating seniors Battle, Cooper and Taurus Samuels following the game in an on-court ceremony with their families and team. The Gophers also recognized student manager Sam Gordon and graduate assistant Nick Pederson.
