Minnesota's Falls to Iowa in Series Rubber Match

Riley Swenson had all four RBI
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell 18-4 to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the rubber match of their weekend series on Saturday.
The Hawkeyes (25-9, 4-5 Big Ten) scored six runs in the second and third innings to take an early lead and never looked back. The Gophers (10-24, 4-5 Big Ten) cut the score to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth but would get no closer as UI scored the final 12 runs of the game.
Senior catcher Riley Swenson went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs for the Golden Gophers. Sophomore Jake Perry put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 5-0, the Golden Gophers first put runs on the board in the second inning. Minnesota then plated a pair with Swenson's two-run home run.
The Golden Gophers deficit expanded to 6-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fourth inning. Minnesota picked up two runs when a single from Swenson scored junior Brady Jurgella and Hokenson, which brought the score to 6-4.
The Golden Gophers were unable to get any closer, as Iowa added 12 runs to their tally on the way to an 18-4 final. The 'U' had a difficult day in the field, posting a season-high five errors. On the mound, the team walked nine Hawkeyes and hit six more.
GAME NOTES
» Swenson drove in a season-high four runs for the Golden Gophers.
» Iowa was led offensively by sophomore Ben Wilmes, who went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
» Sophomore Jack Whitlock led the Hawkeyes pitching staff, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings.
» The Gophers gave up a season-worst 18 runs and hit a season-high six hitters. The nine walks tied a season-most.
