Gophers Fall in Series Finale to Huskers

Kris Hokenson hit his first career home run in the sixth
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell 11-5 to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the series finale on Sunday at Haymarket Park.
Senior Richie Holetz (2-4) was roughed up in the fourth inning for Minnesota (12-30, 5-10 Big Ten) after giving up eight runs as the Huskers broke the game open.
At the plate, the Golden Gophers were paced by junior Kyle Bork, who doubled twice, and Kris Hokenson, who hit a two-run home run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Huskers got one earned run in the first to start the scoring. They went on to score eight in the fourth on two walks, two hit-by-pitches, five hits and two Gophers errors. NU also hit two home runs in the inning.
Minnesota scored three runs in the top of the sixth to break the shutout, getting a sacrifice fly from Jake Perry and a two-run shot to right by Kris Hokenson. Hokenson drove in Jake Perry for run No. 4 on an RBI single in the eighth.
The Huskers added a two-run home run from Max Anderson to go up 11-4 in the eighth.
Minnesota got one back on a sacrifice fly by Ike Mezzenga before falling, 11-5.
GAME NOTES
» Boston Merila kept his 22-game on-base streak going with a hit and a hit-by-pitch.
» Kyle Bork and Kris Hokenson led the Gophers offense with two hits apiece. Hokenson had three RBI, making it six on the weekend for him.
» Left-hander Connor Wietgrefe struck out seven in 4.1 innings out of the bullpen.
» Nebraska was led offensively by left fielder Gabe Swansen and right fielder Cole Evans, who each had two hits, including a home run.
» Will Walsh led the Cornhuskers pitching staff, allowing three runs with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
