MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota swimmer Summit Schmit has been named to the Team USA roster for the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships, it was announced Thursday.

The team, which is set to compete July 31 through Aug. 6 in Manchester, England, was selected in late April based on results at the Para Swimming World Series in Minneapolis. Schmit, who was named to the squad Thursday as a replacement, was born with congenital disarticulation of the right wrist and has no right hand; she competes in the S9, SB9, SM9 classification.

This will not be Schmit's first action on the international level. She competed at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, finishing fifth in the 200m IM, sixth in the 100m fly and seventh in the 400m free. At the 2022 World Championships, the Stillwater, Minn., native earned a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle and placed fourth in the 200m IM. She was also a silver medalist in the 200 IM and bronze medalist in the 100 breast at the 2019 Parapan Am Games.

Schmit recently completed her freshman season with the Golden Gophers where she competed in nine different strokes across eight meets.

The highlight of her season arguably came in December at the Minnesota Invite when she twice broke a Para American record in the 200 fly. In the prelims, she broke her own Para American record in the 200 fly by .19 with a time of 2:16.63.

Later that night, Schmit returned to the pool as the lone swimmer in the 'D' final of the event. With all eight teams in the field and their fans cheering her on, Schmit smashed the record once more, this time taking 2.15 seconds off it and lowering the mark to 2:14.48.
