MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota junior Ben Warian saw his postseason run come to an end Wednesday as he carded a one-over 72 in his final round of the NCAA Regional in Bath, Mich.
Warian ended the tournament in a six-way tie for 11th place with a four-under 209. His score of four-under was six shots back of the lead and three shots behind the top advancing individual from a non-qualifying team.
The 11th-place finish for Warian was the best by a Gopher in an NCAA Regional since Jose Mendez tied for ninth in 2014, while the score of 209 was the lowest since Ben Pisani recorded the same score in 2010.
The low individual that advanced was Kansas State's Luke O'Neill who was three shots ahead of Warian with a seven-under par 206 for the tournament. Georgia (29-under), Illinois (21-under), Oregon (14-under), Florida (12-under), and Texas (10-under) were the top five teams to qualify for the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 26-31.
Warian, who had ended his second round with an eagle, picked right where he left off, going one-under through the first three holes. A double bogey on the par-three fifth hole cost him two shots, but he bounced right back with a birdie on the sixth. A bogey on No. 9 left him at 1-over for the front nine.
His even par back nine featured a bogey on the 13th, and a birdie on the 15th. Warian closed his round with a par on the 18th, a hole he was three-under on through the first two rounds, including an eagle in round two.
Warian led the Gophers this season in scoring average (70.81), rounds under par (13), best finish to par (-10), low 18 score (65), 54 hole score (2x, 206), top-five finishes (3), and top-10 finishes (4).
Warian is scheduled to return next season for his senior year, one of six golfers set to be back next season for Minnesota.
