MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota track and field program is excited to witness yet another World Athletics Championships that features a number of current and former Golden Gophers. The meet, which is scheduled to run from August 19-27, will feature four different Gophers in Budapest, Hungary. Two current student-athletes and two alumni will compete for their respective countries while volunteer coach Brandon Carnes will also represent the United States of America as well.

Kostas Zaltos and Devin Augustine highlight Minnesota's current student-athletes that will represent the Maroon and Gold in Budapest. Both will make their World Championships debut with Zaltos earning an individual bid in the men's hammer throw for his home country of Greece while Augustine will be a member of the Trinidad & Tobago 4x100m relay team. Zaltos will be the first to compete at Worlds with the men's hammer qualification round scheduled for August 19, the opening day of the track and field competition. The first round of qualification is scheduled to start at 5 a.m. CT and can be seen live on CNBC. The final of the men's hammer throw will then be streamed on August 20, on Peacock. The 4x100m relays will be contested starting on August 25 with the preliminary rounds starting at 12:30 p.m. CT and should be able to be viewed on USA Network.

Minnesota's alumni representatives include Nayoka Clunis (2015-20) of Jamaica and Heta Tuuri (2015-18) of Finland . For Tuuri, her appearance on the world stage in the women's high jump competition is her second at the senior level and her third overall. The women's high jump will be contested on August 25, at 3:20 a.m. CT. For Clunis, the qualification for the women's hammer throw world competition is the first for the former Golden Gopher and will start on August 23, at 12 p.m. CT. The women's hammer throw final then will be on August 24, and will be streamed on Peacock.

Additionally, current volunteer assistant coach Brandon Carnes will represent Team USA in the 100m and as a member of the 4x100m relay team. Carnes finished fourth at the USATF Outdoor Championships last month in Eugene, Ore., in the 100m in a time of 10.04 (+1.4 m/s). Carnes was flexed into the World Athletics Championships individual competition after one of Team USA's individuals pulled out of the competition.

The 2023 World Athletics Championships will take place at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary. The venue is built on the eastern bank of the Danube River on the south side of the city. The arena will have an initial capacity of 35,000 for the 2023 championships.
