Champagnie rejoins the Gophers to coach sprints, hurdles, jumps and more.
MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota track and field team has hired Ayesha Champagnie as its newest assistant coach. The former standout at the 'U' will coach the team's sprints, hurdles, jumps and multi event groups in her role.
Champagnie competed with the Maroon and Gold from 2018-20 and still holds a number of top 10 all-time program performances. The Kingston, Jamaica, native was a three-time NCAA qualifier in her college career in the Twin Cities. She earned a Second Team All-America distinction at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships in the heptathlon and then had her 2020 season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic after qualifying in the pentathlon. Champagnie also qualified for the long jump at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships.
"We are extremely excited to welcome Ayesha Champagnie back to our program as an assistant coach," head coach Matt Bingle said. "She was outstanding as a student-athlete and she will fit right in and help us succeed as an assistant coach. She will be a great asset to our sprints, hurdles, jumps and multi groups. We cannot wait to get started with Ayesha back in Minnesota!"
"My collegiate athletic career has awarded me the opportunity to be surrounded by great leadership and athletic administrators," Champagnie said. "Having attended The University of Minnesota, and building relationships throughout my years of eligibility with Coach Bingle, Coach Miller, Coach Kabia and Coach Hopkins has inspired me to pursue a career in the field of college coaching. The opportunity to return to Minneapolis and even more direct, to the University of Minnesota is such a full circle event of which I'll now have the privilege to work alongside such great leaders. To say that I'm excited may be an understatement but I'm looking forward to getting back around familiar faces and I am extremely motivated to get to work."
At Minnesota Champagnie still holds six different program top 10 marks including the school record for the indoor long jump at 6.56m (21-6 1/4). She is third in both the heptathlon (5,821) and the pentathlon (4,155 points) and has top 10 performances in the 60m hurdles (8.39), 100m hurdles (13.95) and the javelin (49.55m | 162-6)
Additionally, Champagnie also enjoyed success for her home country of Jamaica. She was the 2019 Jamaican National Champion in the javelin. She was also a two-time Big Ten medalist and enjoyed a successful career prior to her time at the 'U' as a six-time NJCAA individual National Champion.
Champagnie received her bachelor's degree in youth studies from Minnesota and completed a sports management master's degree at the University of Tennessee.
