Minnesota 2-0 After Opening Weekend

8/20/2023 3:44:00 PM | Soccer

Four Gophers scored, while Megan Plaschko picked up the 20th shutout of her career

MINNEAPOLIS - Two goals in both halves from four Golden Gophers fueled Minnesota past New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Sunday's victory marks Minnesota's second win (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) of the season over the New Hampshire Wild Cats (1-1-0, 0-0 America East).

Graduate goalkeeper Megan Plaschko picked up her 20th career shutout, entering Minnesota's top five in shutouts.

The Gophers notched 18 shots with eight on frame. Sophia Boman led the offense, scoring a goal and seeing five shots total. Megan Nemec, Abi Frandsen, and Jordy Rothwell finished to secure the 4-0 dub.

"We had a great start with great energy, the team was very dynamic and created good chances," said head coach Erin Chastain. "I loved our first goal, we were patient and looked for the right opportunity to break a line and compose our finish. That started us off on a great note."

Minnesota got on the board in the fourth minute thanks to Nemec, who was assisted by Kate Childers. Childers serviced the ball from half over New Hampshire's backline to Nemec who finished.

Frandsen's goal came off a corner kick that was deflected to her at the top of the 18-yard box. After receiving it, she placed it perfectly in the upper left corner of the net. Minnesota went into the locker room ahead, 2-0.

After being fouled in the box, Boman converted the penalty into Minnesota's third goal. Rothwell scored Minnesota's final goal, heading it into the net off a corner kick from Paige Kalal.

Up next, Minnesota hits the road to face Milwaukee on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT and Marquette on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.
