Scouting Milwaukee
Milwaukee opened its season last week with a pair of matches against No. 3 Notre Dame and SIUE. The Panthers scored a goal with 32 seconds remaining to tie the top-ranked Irish, 2-2 on the road. Milwaukee defeated SIUE 3-1 at Korte Stadium. Kat Van Booven led the Panthers, scoring a goal with five shots. For her efforts, Van Booven was named Horizon League Player of the Week.
Last season, Milwaukee defeated Youngstown State in the Horizon League Tournament championship to return to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth season in a row. The Panthers lost to No. 6 Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., in the first round, 3-2.
Scouting Marquette
Last weekend, Marquette kicked off the regular season against No. 18 Northwestern and Colorado. At home, the Golden Eagles fell in a 4-0 loss to the nationally ranked Wildcats at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. In a quick turnaround, Marquette traveled west to Boulder and defeated the Buffaloes, 1-0.
In their last four meetings, Minnesota has won three by one goal. The Golden Gophers and Golden Eagles faced off last season at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, as Minnesota won 3-0. Sophia Boman scored a brace and Gabbie Cesarone finished in the 87th minute to cap off the victory.
A B1G Start
Graduate midfielder Megan Nemec has been honored by the Big Ten for her opening weekend performance against Niagara and New Hampshire, announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Nemec was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career as a Golden Gopher.
Nemec, a native of Tinley Park, Ill., led the offensive through the Maroon and Gold's first two matches. The midfielder scored three goals, a brace against Niagara and one against New Hampshire, dished out four shots (0.750 SOG/SOG%), and secured six points.
The midfielder leads the Big Ten and co-leads NCAA in game-winning goals (2), and co-leads Minnesota and the Big Ten in goals scored (3) and points (6).
This is the first Big Ten Weekly Award Nemec has received. She is the first Gopher to receive Offensive Player of the Week nods since fellow teammate Sophia Boman last season (Sept. 13, 2022).
Milestone Watch
Graduate goalkeeper Megan Plaschko is working her way through Minnesota's history books. With the blank victory over New Hampshire, Plaschko entered the Golden Gophers' top five in career shutouts with 20. She surpassed Teresa O'Hearn (19.5, 1993-1996). Plascho currently sits at No. 2 in goals against average (0.88) and sixth in goalkeeper minutes (4,19:51).
The GOAL-den Gophers
Over the weekend, sixth Gophers scored nine goals against their opponents. Nemec and Jordy Rothwell finished their first goals sporting Maroon and Gold while Sophia Boman, Izzy Brown, Sophia Romine, and Abi Frandsen found the back of the net.
The Grads are Great!
All four of Minnesota's graduate transfers made an appearance at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Combined, the four played a total of 392 minutes, scoring two goals, and assisting Plaschko's clean sheet on Sunday afternoon.
