MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota will see a total of four Golden Gophers participate at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19-27. As of August 7, Minnesota will see two current student-athletes and two alumni compete for their respective countries while volunteer coach Brandon Carnes will also represent the United States of America as well.

Kostas Zaltos and Devin Augustine highlight Minnesota's current student-athletes that will represent the Maroon and Gold in Budapest. Both will make their World Championships debut with Zaltos earning an individual bid in the men's hammer throw for his home country of Greece while Augustine will be a member of the Trinidad & Tobago 4x100m relay team.

Minnesota's alumni representatives include Nayoka Clunis (2015-20) of Jamaica and Heta Tuuri (2015-18) of Finland . For Tuuri, her appearance on the world stage in the women's high jump competition is her second at the senior level and her third overall with one appearance at the World Junior Championships back in 2014. For Clunis, the qualification for the women's hammer throw world competition is the first for the former Golden Gopher.

Additionally, current volunteer assistant coach Brandon Carnes will represent Team USA as a member of the 4x100m relay team. Carnes finished fourth at the USATF Outdoor Championships last month in Eugene, Ore., in the 100m in a time of 10.04 (+1.4 m/s). Carnes is also eligible to compete in the individual 100m competition at the World Championships if one of the top three Team USA representatives in the event is unable to compete for any reason.

The 2023 World Athletics Championships will take place at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary. The venue is built on the eastern bank of the Danube River on the south side of the city. The arena will have an initial capacity of 35,000 for the 2023 championships. The first to compete at the competition will be Kostas Zaltos who will take part in the men's hammer throw qualification round starting at 5 a.m. CT on August 19.
