MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher women's hockey team has named Peyton Hemp captain of the 2023-24 squad, while Madeline Wethington, Abbey Murphy and Ella Huber will be assistant captains, head coach Brad Frost announced Thursday.
"We have been extremely pleased with the leadership amongst our team and these four add to it," Frost said. "Peyton, Abbey, Madeline and Ella all bring individual, unique qualities that will tremendously benefit our program."
All four Gophers will wear a letter for the first time, with Hemp donning the 'C' in her junior season after a 16-goal, 28-point campaign in 2022-23. The Andover, Minn., native was named to the WCHA All-Tournament Team after helping the Maroon and Gold to a WCHA Final Faceoff Championship.
Wethington enters her fifth and final season with Minnesota with assistant captain honors after acting as a staple of the Gopher defense in 2022-23. Wethington's 39 blocked shots in 2022-23 finished as the second most on the team. She was also one of nine Gophers to play in all 39 games last season.
Murphy will wear the 'A' following a tremendous second season with the Gophers. The 2022 Olympian recorded 29 goals in 2022-23, finishing the season in stellar fashion by scoring one goal in nine of the final 10 games of the season.
Entering her junior year, Huber will look to build upon a sophomore campaign in which she ranked sixth on the team in points (29) and goals (10). The Northfield, Ill., native has played in 39 and 37 games in her first two seasons, respectively, serving as a consistent force for the Gophers.
The Minnesota captains will don their letters for the first time when they face off with RIT in Rochester, N.Y. on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6:00 p.m. CT.
