1/20/2024 7:25:00 PM | Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis program had an electric start to the 2024 spring season, clinching back-to-back 7-0 victories against Marquette and Lindenwood on Saturday. The Gophers will start the year 2-0 at home and 2-0 overall. The program extends to a 12-game win streak against Marquette, now 15-1 all-time, and clinches a win in its first-ever meeting with Lindenwood.
Quote from Coach Arterberry
"It was a good start to the season," said head coach Lois Arterberry. "We came out and competed the way we wanted to in these first two matches. Throughout the week, we just emphasized playing our own style of tennis and to not let our opponents influence us any other way. Today, all of the girls did a great job of being confident, aggressive, going for shots when they had the right opportunities, and just being brave out there on the court. They also had great emotional control. Obviously, we have things to continue working on as we go further through the season. The level of tennis continues to get higher with every single match, but we're ready. This is what we've been preparing for and we're excited about it."
Coach Arterberry on Mia Liepert
"We had a good performance from Mia, playing in the number one spot. She definitely stepped up her level and remained mature out there on the tennis court."
Minnesota vs. Marquette
The Maroon and Gold got off to a great start to the match, claiming the doubles point and going undefeated in that round. No. 2 Emma Belluomini and Anali Kocevar struck first with a 6-0 win against Maquette's Emma Davis and Laura Kaiser. No. 1 Sofia Pinto and Mia Liepert clinched the doubles point for Minnesota with their 6-3 win, and No. 3 Aiva Schmitz and Sofia Pizzoni rounded out the first half of the match with a 6-3 victory of their own.
In singles play, the Gophers continued their undefeated streak. Victory was mathematically clinched when No. 6 Sofia Pizzoni claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Marquette's Emma-Jane Barclay to make it 4-0. Minnesota earned its first win of the season after a final score of 7-0.
