Minnesota moves to 5-0 (1-0 B1G) on the year
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 17 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team opened their 2024 B1G home slate with a decisive win over No. 20 Iowa to move to 5-0 (1-0 Big Ten) on the year. The Gophers tied a season-best with a score of 196.850 while the Hawkeyes tallied a team score of 196.150.
Minnesota persevered through adversity after an early 8.525 score on the balance beam. The team was able to recover and still earn a 49.125 score in the event.
"The way the team rallied after that and just attacked balance beam was just so impressive," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "We were so proud of the girls in that moment. That's going to serve us well moving forward."
The Gophers tied their score of 196.850 from week one, which was a program-best score in a season-opening road meet. Since 1989, Minnesota is 28-8 in home openers at the Pav. Under Jenny Hansen, the Gophers are now 10-1, with the only loss coming in 2017
The Gophers moved to 27-9 in Big Ten home openers and 23-8-1 all-time against Iowa.
Iowa's Adeline Kenlin won the all-around crown with a score of 39.275 while Gianna Gerdes finished second at 39.225.
Mya Hooten took home two event titles, posting scores of 9.950 in both the vault (season-high) and on the floor. Minnesota's best team performance came on floor once again, where they posted a 49.425. The 'U' currently ranks No. 12 in the country on floor on Road to Nationals.
"When you get a chance to watch Mya, you can't help but take notice," said Hansen. "She just has so much fun and has great energy, she's electric when you see her. She draws in everyone as soon as she goes."
