Gophers Outlast Mavericks In Overtime To Secure Extra Point

1/27/2024 4:57:00 PM | Women's Hockey

The University of Minnesota women's hockey team prevailed over Minnesota State in its series finale, walking away from Saturday's contest with an extra point for an overtime win.

Sledding was tough for both teams through the first two periods, as just one goal was scored and powerplay opportunities were slim. Minnesota capitalized on one of two Minnesota State penalties, a critical play in a closely-contested contest. A third-period goal from the Mavericks sent the game to overtime, where junior Peyton Hemp scored the game-winning goal.

Junior goaltender Skylar Vetter started in net for the Maroon and Gold and registered 15 saves.

After nearly 18 minutes of action, the Gophers struck first as Josefin Bouveng sent a one-time shot into the back of the Maverick net. The Gophers started the game slow, but entered the second period with a one-goal lead after Bouveng's ninth goal of the season.

The second frame featured just one powerplay opportunity for the Gophers, which they weren't able to capitalize on. Neither team was able to get into an offensive rhythm in the first 40 minutes of play, as stout defense and goaltending prevailed for both teams.

The Mavericks evened the game up at one when they found the back of the net just under halfway through the third period. P. Hemp ended the game just 54 seconds into the extra frame, sending the Gophers back to Minneapolis with an extra point.
