1/4/2024 10:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Mike Mitchell Jr., led five players in double-figures with 18 points, Dawson Garcia had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, Elijah Hawkins had 14 points and seven assists, and Pharrel Payne came off the bench for 12 points and eight rebounds, as Minnesota (11-3, 2-1 B1G) recorded a key 73-71 road victory at Michigan.

Mitchell Jr. made 6-of-12 field goals, including 4-of-9 from three-point range, to lead Minnesota in scoring for the third-straight game. Hawkins, who leads the nation at 7.8 assists per game, finished with a season-high 14 points by making 4-of-5 three-pointers. Garcia notched his third point-rebound double-double of the season, his second in Big Ten play, and Payne was a force in the second half with eight points and five boards after the break.

Minnesota trailed 5-2 early, but the Gophers hit six of eight during a 13-7 run for a 15-12 lead. Hawkins had five points during that stretch, including a deep three-pointer for the three-point lead. The Wolverines scored five straight points to grab a 17-15 lead, Mitchell Jr. responded with a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to give the Gophers a 20-19 edge. A second trey of the half from Hawkins and a layup from Payne put Minnesota up 25-23 with 9:22 remaining, but the Gophers missed their next six shots and Michigan pulled ahead, 29-25. A Garcia layup ended the drought, and layups from Mitchell Jr. and Ola-Joseph tied the score at 31-31 with 2:57 left. But the Wolverines closed the half on a 6-2 run for a 37-33 halftime lead.

Mitchell Jr. led the Gophers with nine first-half points, while Hawkins had eight points and three assists, Ola-Joseph scored six points, and Garcia added four points and a team-high six rebounds.

Michigan stretched its lead to 47-40 early in the second half, but Mitchell Jr. hit his second three-pointer of the half, Payne dunked on a great assist from Hawkins, and Garcia made a layup to tie the score 47-47. A 6-2 Michigan run put the home team up 53-49 with 10:52 remaining, but Garcia scored five points during a 7-0 run to grab a 56-53 lead with 8:46 left. With the score tied at 59-all, the Gophers got a layup and a dunk from Payne and three-pointers from Mitchell Jr. and Hawkins during a 10-3 run to give Minnesota a 69-62 lead at the final media timeout of regulation. The Wolverines pulled within 69-66, but another dunk from Payne with 1:50 left kept the Gophers up five, 71-66. Following a Michigan three, Hawkins drove the lane and found Ola-Joseph for an alley-oop dunk that proved to be the game-winner in the 73-71 win.

Minnesota returns to Williams Arena to take on the Maryland Terrapins on Sunday. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m., and televised on Big Ten Network.
