Phoebe Awoleye tied a Maturi Pavilion record with 14 blocks
MINNEAPOLIS --The No. 14 Minnesota volleyball team took down the Maryland Terrapins in three sets (25-21, 25-15, 25-18) on Saturday night at Maturi Pavilion to complete their second sweep of the weekend.
A career night for Phoebe Awoleye paced the Gophers, as she went for a collegiate-best 14 blocks, tying the most ever in a single match at Maturi Pavilion.. Lydia Grote totaled 12 kills while Zeynep Palabiyik tallied 11 digs.
"I think it was our pins," said redshirt senior middle Phoebe Awoleye. "They had the best lineups tonight. I just trusted them and that they were going to set me up good and I just had to get there."
The Gophers (11-5, 4-2 Big Ten) hit .430 for the match and held the Terps to just .119. The team posted 19 blocks, which was a season-high and the most for the team since the spring season of 2021.
Samantha Schnitta led Maryland (10-7, 1-5 Big Ten) with 13 kills while Sydney Dowler paced the offense with 25 assists.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Minnesota took the first set, 25-21. The two teams went back and forth during the first third of the set, splitting the first 28 points before the 'U' took a 15-14 lead into the media break. Wucherer and Grote had five early combined kills to get the offense going. Maryland kept the score to within one to two points before a kill from Grote and a block from Awoleye and Grote made it 21-18, forcing a Terps timeout. UMD cut the deficit to just two at 22-20 after a block, forcing Minnesota into a timeout. After an ace, the lead was cut to one before a Hanson kill made it 23-21. Two more Gophers points gave the home team a 25-21 set one win. The 'U' had six team blocks, led by Awoleye with five.
SET 2 | The Gophers started off red hot in set two, scoring nine of the first 11 points, forcing Maryland into an early timeout. The Terrapins would cut the lead to six at 15-9 before the 'U' accelerated to the finish line to win set two, 25-15. The 'U' held a 10-6 advantage to the finish line, led by five more blocks from Awoleye as she tied her career-best with 11. Wucherer ended the set with her fourth kill of the match.
SET 3 | It was another back and forth set as neither team led by more than two points for most of the frame. The Gophers took a 15-14 lead into the media break after Hanson's sixth kill of the set. The Terps kept it within one to two points before a 4-0 run by the 'U' made it 22-17 after a kill from Grote and a block from Awoleye and Hanson. After a timeout from Maryland, the 'U' scored three of the next four points to win, 25-18, taking the match in three.
