Minnesota posted 12 blocks as a team

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The No. 14 Minnesota volleyball team fell to the No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions in three sets (16-25, 20-25, 14-25) on Sunday afternoon at Rec Hall.

The Gophers (12-6, 5-3 Big Ten) hit just .112 as a team while the Nittany Lions posted a .305 percentage, the second-highest total Minnesota has allowed this year.

Julia Hanson paced the Gophers with 11 kills while Phoebe Awoleye posted a team-high nine blocks. Zeynep Palabiyik led the backend with 12 digs.

Jess Mruzik led Penn State (18-1, 7-1 Big Ten) with 18 kills and 16 digs while Camryn Hannah had 11 kills. Izzy Starck paced the offense with 46 assists.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Gophers took an early 2-0 lead before the Nittany Lions scored four straight to make it 4-2. PSU grabbed the early advantage, leading by as many as three before Minnesota cut the deficit to one at 14-13. A kill from PSU's Hannah made it 15-13 at the media timeout. Five of Minnesota's first 13 points came from blocks. The 'U' would slice the lead to one before a 3-1 PSU spurt made it 19-16, leading to a Minnesota timeout. The Nittany Lions ended the set on an 8-0 run, taking the first frame, 25-16.

SET 2 | Set two started much like set one as the two teams jockeyed back and forth, with neither team leading by more than a point until Minnesota took a 13-11 lead halfway through the set. PSU would respond with a 4-1 run, however, taking a 15-14 lead into the media break. A block from Awoleye and Shaffmaster paired with a kill from Hanson put Minnesota up 17-16 before a 6-2 Nittany Lions run made it 22-19, advantage for the home team. The Gophers called a timeout to spur the momentum. A service error for PSU made it 22-20 before three straight points helped them close out the set, 25-20, putting Minnesota down 2-0.

SET 3 | The Nittany Lions kept their momentum going, scoring eight of the first 12 points before the Gophers called their first timeout of the frame. PSU led by as many as seven at 11-4 before a 3-0 Minnesota spurt sliced the deficit back to four. The Nittany Lions went back up six at 14-8 after a trip of kills, but Minnesota responded with a 4-1 run to make it 15-12 after a pair of blocks from Awoleye, her eighth and ninth of the match. After a PSU timeout, the home team scored three straight to go back up six at 18-12. Minnesota would get no closer, falling 25-14 to end the match.
