Gophers Win Home Opener Against Boston University
10/4/2024 10:33:00 PM | Women's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 2 ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team ended their 2024-25 home debut with a 1-0 win over Boston University. The Gophers move to 3-0 to start the season.
While the game was scoreless through the first two periods, Minnesota maintained a heavy offensive presence as the Gophers out-shot the Terriers 22-4 through second intermission. Minnesota's defense also held strong while being shorthanded, only allowing two shots on goal during BU's three power plays in the first two-thirds of the game.
The third period saw senior goaltender Skylar Vetter make a pivotal save on a BU penalty shot, preventing Lilli Welcke from getting the Terriers on the board. Minnesota would go on a five-minute power play with only 1:38 left in the third period. Just 18 seconds into the power play, redshirt senior Abbey Murphy tallied her second consecutive game-winning goal, assisted by Peyton Hemp and Josefin Bouveng, clinching the Gophers the first game of their two-game home-opening series.
Quotable:
"It was great," said head coach Brad Frost. "Obviously, having the band here brought a ton of energy, there was a great student section here today, and just a really good crowd. It was a really good hockey game. We carried the play from a shots perspective and chances perspective, but credit BU, their goaltender played great. They blocked a lot of shots and did what they needed to have a chance at the end. But we had Skyler Vetter with a huge save on that penalty shot, and then being able to get that power play goal with about a minute to go was huge."
Additionally Quotes from Coach Frost:
On Abbey Murphy
"Big-time players step up in big-time moments, and that was a big-time play. Really good job getting possession off the draw. Nice one-timer by Josefin [Bouveng], and then Murphy played downhill on the backside and finished it."
Notable:
- With her score tonight, Abbey Murphy simultaneously tallied her 22nd career power play goal and 16th career game-winning goal.
- Skylar Vetter netted her 12th career shutout.
- Minnesota out-shot Boston University 41-11.
- Josefin Bouveng and Abbey Murphy both led the Gophers in shots-on-goal with 7 apiece.
