Hanson's Double-Double Leads No. 15 Minnesota in a Sweep of MSU

11/1/2024 7:10:00 PM | Volleyball

Julia Hanson posted 16 kills (.519) and 10 digs

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 15 Minnesota volleyball team defeated the Michigan State Spartans in three sets (25-15, 25-15, 28-26) on Friday evening at the Breslin Center. With the win, Minnesota earns their third straight victory and fifth in its last six tries.

"I definitely think we can build on this win," said redshirt senior setter Melani Shaffmaster. "Towards the end of each of the sets, we let the other team get on a run and that's been a thing the past few games. We need to be able to finish the games and not let teams go on three- and four-point runs. We can't get too complacent and just need to play our game."

The Gophers (15-6, 8-3 Big Ten) hit .350 for the night, their ninth time hitting over .300 in a match this season. The 'U' held MSU to just .151 in the sweep.

Julia Hanson paced the Gophers with 16 kills (.519) and 10 digs while Melani Shaffmaster had 35 assists, five digs and four kills. Calissa Minatee led the defense with a game-high four blocks.

Taylor Preston led Michigan State (8-14, 1-10 Big Ten) with nine kills and two blocks while Akasha Anderson went for seven kills and 11 digs.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Gophers started out hot, scoring five of the first six points. Grote had two early kills in the initial run. MSU scored the next two to make it 6-3 before Minnesota went back on the offensive, going on a 9-5 run, taking a 15-8 lead into the media timeout. Six different Gophers tallied kills in the first 15 points. The 'U' refused to slow down, scoring the next four points and forcing MSU into two separate timeouts. MSU would get no closer than eight the rest of the way as Minnesota finished set one, 25-15. The 'U' hit .333 with 16 kills in the first frame, led by Hanson with four. MSU was held to just .077.

SET 2 | Minnesota started strong again in set two, posting seven of the first 10 points. Hanson tallied three early kills in the frame. A 4-1 Spartans run cut the deficit to one at 8-7 before three straight Gophers points made it 11-7, forcing the home team into its first timeout of the set. The timeout didn't slow the 'U' down as it scored four of the next five to go up 15-8, getting an ace from Palabiyik and a trip of MSU errors. The Spartans would cut the lead to five at 17-12 before kills from Lauren Crowl and Wucherer put the visitors up 19-12, leading to another Spartans timeout. Minnesota again expanded its lead to as many as 10 before closing out set two, 25-15, once again. Julia Hanson passed the 10-kill mark once again and had 11 after two frames.

SET 3 | The Spartans were the aggressor to begin the third set, scoring five of the first eight points. The Gophers would respond, tallying seven of the next nine to take a 10-7 lead. A 6-3 MSU run tied the set up at 13-13 before a kill from Hanson and an MSU attacking error made it 15-13, Minnesota, heading into the media break. A kill from Wucherer and an ace from Skylar Gray put the visitors up 17-14 in the final set, forcing an MSU timeout. A pair of MSU errors combined with an ace from Alex Acevedo forced MSU's final timeout as the home team trailed, 20-16. They would respond with three straight after the break, however, bringing the Gophers lead to one at 20-19 before coach Cook called timeout. MSU would continue its hot streak, posting four of the next six to go up 23-22, leading to another Minnesota timeout as the Gophers trailed, 23-22. Minnesota went up 24-23 after the break, but struggled to close it out as the Spartans staved off a pair of match points before Minnesota finally outlasted them, 28-26. A block by Awoleye and Grote ended the match for a Gophers sweep.
